Downgrade to Free , permission lockout

Szabolcs Dosa October 10, 2024

I have downgraded our Standard plan to free. Because the free plan does not allow me to change permission some of the remaining members are locked out of the projects do to the permissions that were set when we had standard plan. But now the free plan does not allow me to set them so everyone can see.

How can I have the projects use the default permission of Jira that comes with the Free limitation ?

Hi @Szabolcs Dosa

I understand that you have switched to a Free plan for Jira and since that time there are projects that have customized permissions you want to change.

You can't change project permissions in free plans.  The only way to do this would be upgrade or start a trial of a standard/premium product plan.

This is also explained in What is the Free Jira Cloud plan?

I'd recommend following the steps in https://support.atlassian.com/subscriptions-and-billing/docs/manage-your-bill-for-standard-and-premium-plans/#Changing-product-plan-from-Free-to-paid

as this will give you steps to upgrade the site plan.

If for some reason you cannot start a trial of Jira, then please navigate to https://www.atlassian.com/company/contact/purchasing-licensing?redirectSource=sac-wac-redirect#/ and then select "Quotes and Plan Changes" and "Change cloud plan".  This can create a support ticket with our customer advocates (CA) team.  That team can work with you to either upgrade the plan or at least start a trial of a standard plan.  Once you have that plan activated on the site, you should then be able to make changes to the project permissions.

Thank you for your feedback. While I can reduce the team size to one person, adjust the settings, and then revert to the free plan to resize the team again, this approach seems somewhat unproductive for addressing the issue.

I understand that the free plan does not permit private boards, and downgrading from a paid plan implies that all boards will become public for those remaining in the domain. I would appreciate receiving a warning prior to this change, along with a clear outline of the step-by-step adjustments that will occur if I proceed instead of resubscribing to fix the issue as you described .

Hi Szabolcs - Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

Go to Project Settings while on the project. I then typically go to the Summary menu option.

Then scroll down to the Permissions section on the right side. Click on the Permission scheme name.

On the ensuing page, click on Actions link in the upper right then select Use a different scheme.

Edit or change schemes are not allowed in free version

Will double check when i get infront of a pc.

I have followed your steps , while yes this is how you change the scheme for the permission when you have standard licence , in free version it does not allow it.

"Permissions aren't editable on the current plan. Upgrade to customize permissions.
