When I complete a Sprint, why does done issues always make it to the next sprint? I end up having numerous issues in one sprint backlog. I want to see that only uncompleted issues are moved to the next sprint backlog and not the done issues.
Where are done issues kept after a sprint is completed.
Please what do I do?
Hello @Prince Abih
Are you working with a Company Managed project or a Team Managed project? It will say at the bottom of the navigation pane on the left.
When you complete the sprint do you get a pop-up telling you how many issues where completed and how many are incomplete, and giving you an option to put them in the backlog or the next sprint?
Only the issues in the column farthest to the right on your board will be considered "complete" when the Sprint is ended. It does not matter what the actual status of the issue is, only whether or not that status is mapped to the right-most column of the board.
Are the issues that are ending up in you next sprint assigned Statuses that are NOT mapped to the right-most column of your board?
Additionally if an issue has any Subtasks in a Status that is not in the right-most column of the board, then that issue will also be considered incomplete.
Thank you @Trudy Claspill I work with both a Team Managed project and a Company Managed one, in each case the same thing happen? I am being asked if to put the issues on backlog or new sprint but I want the done issues not to follow suit.
Is it possible to hide the done issues so they do not appear on the next sprint?
Also, if all issues for the sprint have moved to the last column before I ended the Sprint, what will happen to those issue? Will they go hidden? or travel to the next sprint backlog or backlog.

The issues that are considered complete (in the right most column of the board) will not be moved to the backlog or the next sprint when you end the current sprint. Only incomplete issues will move to the option you select.
Issues that are in the right most column will remain displayed in that column until you end the sprint. They will not be hidden unless you use a filter to hide them.
When you end the sprint, those issues will no longer display on the board because the board displays only issues in Active sprints. The issues will also no longer display in the Backlog screen because that screen display only issues in Active Sprints, Future Sprints, and in the backlog. The issues still exist, they are just no longer displayed because the work is "done". You can still see the issues by selecting the Issues option in the navigation pane, by viewing Sprint reports under the Reports option in the navigation pane, and searching for them.

Hi Trudy Claspill,
"The issues that are considered complete (in the right most column of the board) will not be moved to the backlog or the next sprint when you end the current sprint."
This is not true in my case.
When I try to close/end the current sprint and start a new sprint, Completed/Done issues are carried through to the next Sprint. These completed/done issues (take note: they dont have parent or child issues) will be sitting on the Completed/Done column in the Board of the current sprint. yes you can hide the Completed/Done column in the Board, but they are still there.
My quick fix is to create an automation rule. When issues are transitioned to Done/completed, Automation edits the issue (edits the Sprint) and clears the Sprint of (of the issue) of its contents and leave the sprint empty. The benefit is that they would not be sitting in the active sprint done column anymore.

The statements I made describe how Jira is intended to work. If that is not what you are experiencing then there is a reason for that, though it may not.be obvious.
If you would like the Community to help you diagnose that, please open a new post to provide the details of your scenario. Community members will ask you for additional information about your situation.
Alternately if you are using a paid subscription of Jira, your Jira Admin, Site Admin, or Organization Admin can open a support case directly with Atlassian. They will be able to access your system, if given permission, where Community members can't.
If you do contact Atlassian support it would be great if you report back the root cause and solution. I have seen a few other posts where people have noted a similar problem and the usual causes have not been present.
Clearing the Sprint field when issues are completed will have a negative impact on you sprint and velocity reports.

There are already a couple of post which are particularly to this issue. But no one has come up with a better solutions yet or at least answer the questions on why it keeps happening. Those posts should be enough for the community to help.
My case is simple, all the completed issues since 2022, Jira moved them forward each time to new active sprint, even if they had been completed months ago.
Btw, removing the sprint in the Sprint field works for me as the resolution date (of the completed issue) will work just fine for us for reporting purposes.

I am having the same issue. Anything that was set as Done has been moved to the next sprint but now its time to clean up so the only solution is to change the status to Complete.

I'm having the same issue. Random issues completed (or resolved) months ago are now appearing on an active sprint board.
