Do Jira Projects have Hierarchy Structure Capability?

Christie Smith
August 26, 2021

Hello,

I have several Jira projects that are phases of a larger system implementation. I was wondering if Jira provides a method to configure a parent project to then associate child projects with or if they can only be independent (unassociated) projects as they are today?

Thank you for your time,

Christie

Hi Christie,

The concept of project and child projects does not exist in Jira itself. But you might be looking for Advanced Roadmaps it is built-in in Jira Cloud Premium.

Some third party plugins can also provide flexible hierchy: examples are BigPicture and Structure.

Hi Christie

You can use Components for Sub-projects.

Hi @Christie Smith ,

Besides what has already been said, there's also the native structure of issues:

  1. Epic
  2. Any other standard issue types other than Epic
  3. Sub-task issue types

Regards

Hi @Christie Smith

Let me just add a few words about BigPicture. Regardless of project setup in Jira, with BigPicture, you will be able to manage them flexibly, thank to "Boxes".

Boxes were designed to build and manage diversified portfolios of initiatives in BigPicture and better adjust different Project Management frameworks.

Please find more information in the article: Concept of a Box.
