Do I need a sprint to have epics?

Daniel Cavenagh

The sprint is giving me "locked" timelines that I want to show each epic and tasks with their own time schedule

I used a sprint and then epics under it and its not allowing me to show the "gantt chart" look as the dates are locked in as what the sprint has. I wanted to delete the sprint and use just the epics as part of the roadmap but wasnt sure if i needed the sprint.

Also, can I delete a sprint without deleting all the epics in it?

Hi Daniel,

I’m a bit confused by your post but let me see if I can get the conversation started here.

First to answer your literal question in the title. You do not need a sprint in order to have Epics they are not connected in any real way. You can illustrate Epics within a sprint if you wish.

The body of your post seems to be referring to using the roadmap. Where an epic and it’s associated stories can be illustrated in a timeline fashion. However I don’t quite understand the question in the body of your post. Having said that it is Important for me to note that I do not use advance roadmaps today. So my lack of understanding  may be  influenced by that fact.

Epics are not under a sprint. Yes you can delete the sprint it will have no effect on your epics.

If you have not already done so I would refer you to an recommend consuming these articles associated with roadmaps - schedule-issues-in-advanced-roadmaps-according-to-sprints
