Differences between fieldformat "Checkboxes" and "Select list (multiple choices)"

I'm at the point to create a customfield where users can select one or more values from a given list.

I can choose between two fieldformats:

1) checkboxes.

2) Select list (multiple choices)

Is there any difference between these two formats?

Think about, how they work in filtering, lists,  etc.

Hi @jeroen_wilmes 

Both are mulit select fields. From technical point of view both looks the same. Difference is in how both fields are presented in Jira UI. Checkboxes take more space on screen than multi select list when you have many values.
