Difference with parent link on a ticket and link as child of or parent of

We are using advanced roadmaps aka Jira planner.

We had queries off of a tickets "parent link". Some members were linking tickets with a "child of" or "parent of" relationship instead. I was able to fix my filter to look for both but wondering what is the purpose of the two?

It is mainly to indicate the specific relationship between the tickets. It helps if you are looking for just the child or just the parent.
