Difference between Custom field description and Field Config description?

Hello together, 

I am just wondering where the best place for the description of specific fields is? 

In my opinion the field configuration is the right place to do this because therefore I don't face the problem that the description will be attached to every projects which uses this new custom field. 

Or is there a functional difference between both options?

Hi Tobias,

So the custom field description is the global one. If a field configuration does not have a description set it will default to the custom field one. It's best not to add any to the default field configuration scheme as you can't delete that from Jira and for some fields people may want to change a description. Thus it's best to use the actual description in the custom field itself

As jira fields scale this is important because when the default field configuration is copied, for one off fields people want change to then you modify it and it will show just for those projects, but all other projects will be not imapcted.
