Descriptions from Issues keep disappearing

Sean Somerville
February 19, 2025

When creating a task - we'd have an "action item" inside the description. A checklist of three things. When checking off those things, sometimes they would stick, sometimes they wouldn't. At first I thought I was going crazy and after double checking, I was confident I checked off the first action item inside that task. Once, I checked the action item box, left the task, came back immediately and watched the checkmark fade from the screen and that box. Today, I checked the first action item box again, and immediately it wiped the entire description of the task from my screen. Now it is blank. No three checkboxes, it's all empty. WHY?!

Hi @Sean Somerville

Sorry to hear about this problem.  The way you describe it makes it sounds very much like another report I saw recently in https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Jira-questions/Ticking-a-check-box-in-a-child-issue-s-description-causes-it-to/qaq-p/2949761

Could you take a look at the video in that thread and see if the behavior there is the same as yours?  If so, then I think we may have a bug yet to document.

I created a support case on your behalf over in https://getsupport.atlassian.com/servicedesk/customer/portal/23/JST-1105539

If you could followup there, I think that might be best so that our support team can investigate further.

Thanks

Andy

Looks like it is unassigned: https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRACLOUD-97513

Hi Sean - Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

Are you using any third party apps like with checkboxes to insert into the Description field? Or how are you adding those?

Also, unlike other fields in Jira, the Description field has a Save button that much be clicked after you change anything in the field.

Oh hi @John Funk didn't see you there

I go to add task in my board. I click the description. A text field shows up. I click 'Action Item' and a checkbox appears. I save. There's no problem adding those boxes.

When I go to check them off, I've noticed it gives me the option to check that box without clicking edit description. And it changes to a check. I do this often. When I leave that task, go to a new one, and come back to it, sometimes it saves that check, other times it does not. It's a mixed result.

And what happened the other day, was I check the box straight from the task, not going to edit description as I usually do, and then it just disappeared all together. The history shows it going from 'Action Item' to 'none' but doesn't explain how that happened.
