I have created a new project and a new issue type.
In defining the new issue type, I chose the wrong type for a field (text instead of dropdown). When I deleted this custom field, I COULD NOT CREATE a new field with the correct type (dropdown), and instead got the error:
"Already exists. Try another name."
This continued EVEN AFTER I deleted the Task Issue type and recreated it.
I REALLY NEED THAT FIELD NAME.
How does one go about this? Do I lose?
My problem is that I was creating a next-gen project. The current assumption is a bug. Old-gen projects work fine.
Configuration in Jira is global so it can be shared. You mention deleting an issue type, but I suspect you have not deleted the custom field itself.
Go to Admin -> Issues -> Custom fields and check that the field is really deleted.

My problem was related to next-gen projects. I didn't even know there were more than one gen of Jira projects. Works fine on old-gen ones.
