Hi everyone!
When I manage the subscription of an app in Jira I get the Deactivate option (Which in reality it means cancel subscription). Also to note that this option is not in every app to which we are subscribed:
After cancelling the subscription I get :
And when I go to the app details, in the top right corner of the screen I see the option to unsubscribe:
After I dumped you all with this context, what are my doubts?
- What does it mean to "deactivate" an app in the manage subscription screen and what is the difference with the unsubscribe in the app details screen?
- Is there any way to deactivate an app? Without cancelling subscription? We want to deactivate an app for a short period of time where we could activate in any moment without loosing data.
- Unrelated but maybe someone knows: I as an app-admin (not org admin), can no longer see the full billing details.
Thanks beforehand!
Hi @Asier Vadillo ,
1) Deactivate vs Unsubscribe
Deactivate = it actually cancels the subscription at the end of the billing cycle. It does not just pause the app.
Unsubscribe = same thing. It also cancels the subscription.
Both mean the same in practice but the wording is different, action is the same.
2) temporarily deactivate an app without cancelling
No. Jira Cloud does not support pausing or temporarily disabling an app.
If you cancel and later re-subscribe, the app may lose access to data (depends on the app vendor).
3) Why can’t you see full billing details as app admin?
Only Org Admins / Billing Admins can see full billing and payment details.
App admins have limited visibility by design.
Hi @Hari Krishna ! Thanks for the answer
1 - I understand that deactivate and Unsubscribe do the same thing. But why once deactivated I can still unsubscribe and why the option to Deactivate is not in every app?
2- That's nice to know
3- My permissions have not changed and last friday I was able to see all the billing details, today I can see the plan and each app but now how much is going to cost.

Hi @Asier Vadillo ,
Both actions cancel the subscription at the end of the billing cycle.
After deactivating, the app is still active until the billing period ends, so the UI still shows the Unsubscribe option. That’s why you see both.
The reason Deactivate is not shown for every app is because it depends on how the app vendor configured billing in Atlassian Marketplace. Some apps show only Unsubscribe, some show both.
As per the other question App admin role only shows basic plan/app details, not full billing costs—requires Org admin + Billing admin roles via admin.atlassian.com/billing.
Sudden change likely from Atlassian session enforcement or recent UI update; clear cache or get Billing admin added by Org admin.

Hi @Hari Krishna , thanks a lot.
One last question, it seems that the unsubscribe button on the app details, navigates you to the manage subscription screen, that then has this deactivate button.

But some apps do not have the Deactivate option, How can I deactivate those apps? Being app admin.
Image for example:
I am also app-admin in Confluence

Hi @Asier Vadillo ,
Some apps (like the Confluence example) use the new partner-managed or unified billing experience.
In this setup, app admins will only see “Change plan” or “Cancel subscription” options, and there is no separate Deactivate button.
For these apps, canceling the subscription is the only way to stop using the app.
If anything else is needed (such as immediate cancellation or reactivation), it must be handled by an org admin or billing admin through the billing portal or by contacting Atlassian Support or the Plugin vendor.
