Did you mean:

'Days in column' feature in a company-managed "buissness space"?

Zoe N.
December 1, 2025

On some Boards in my Company which are in a company-managed "software space" I have see the feature 'Days in column'. I know that on these boards users or admins can choose to enable 'Days in column' feature via the board settings.

I have a space which is a company-managed "buissness space". I do not have the same option to enable 'Days in column' feature there. Is there a possibility to enable 'Days in column' feature in a company-managed "buissness space"? If not, are there any alternatives? In my company-managed "buissness space" I have a workflow with multiple status and I would like to track how long a work item is in one status.

Hi @Zoe N. 👋🏻,

Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

Unfortunately, Jira does not provide a built-in field that shows how long an issue has spent in a specific status. However, we don’t want this to be a limitation for you. If you are open to using third-party solutions, we would like to recommend Time in Status.

🌱 With Time in Status, you can view:

  • The total time spent in the selected status for any issue
  • The current status duration for the issue
  • Or only the time spent in the selected status during the last transition
    Screenshot 2025-12-04 at 17.53.08.png

🌱Additionally, you can select multiple statuses and group them together for combined reporting, giving you much more flexibility in tracking workflow durations.

🍀 To learn more, feel free to contact me or explore the application through the Atlassian Marketplace link  I’ve provided.

Alternatively, if you would like to try or explore our other custom fields, we also offer another app called Custom Fields ++ for Jira, which includes Time in Status along with many other custom fields. Feel free to visit this app as well to discover all available custom field options. 🍀

Hi @Zoe N.

To calculate the days in status of an issue, you might be interested in a mktplace app,

Time in Status Reports

With the app you can generate reports such as:

- time in status for Jira issues

- how long colleagues have been assigned to issues

- average time issue has been spent in each state

- date of issue entry into a status

- transition and status count for each issue

- Group your statuses to define your own Cycle/Lead times

- Export your data to a BI tool like Power BI or a csv file

Do give it a try !!

The app works with Team Managed Projects too. Also the app has 20+ reports to meet a variety of other use cases.

More details here.

Disclaimer : I am part of the app team for this add-on

Hello @Zoe N.

Welcome to the Atlassian community.

The "Days in column" option is available only for Scrum and Kanban boards. It is not available to add to the board that is automatically included for a Business space.

An alternative would be to create another board for the Business space by:

1. Creating a filter that selects all work items from the Business space and saving that filter.

2. Share that filter with other users that would need to see the board.

3. Creating a new Kanban board based on that saved filter.

4. Add a Shortcut to that new board within the Business space Shortcuts tab.

Hei Trudy, Thank you for this solution. So the "work around" board would mimic the original one? But I would still need to work in the original board or can I work on the work items in the  "work around" board?

The functionality of a "software" Kanban board and a Business project native board is not identical. For example:

In the Business board if an item has sub-tasks those sub-tasks are all nested under the parent item in the column that corresponds to the parent item's status, regardless of the status of the sub-tasks.

In a software Kanban board the sub-tasks appear in the column that aligns with their own status rather than staying in the same column as the parent.

Additionally

  • the filtering functionality is different
  • the Business board has a Group option that changes the criteria for the columns from Status to other options. That option doesn't exist in the Kanban board. The Group option in the Kanban board enacts Swimlanes (horizontal groupings) but keep the columns the same.
  • the kanban board has different options for how long items can stay in the "done" column.

Those are just a few differences.

Any change that you make to an item through either the Business board or the Kanban board goes straight into the item. The Kanban board doesn't have a copy of the item. If the change you make can be visualized through the other board, like a change of Status, that will be reflected in the both boards. You can work on items through either board.

Hi @Zoe N. ,

If you don't mind using third-party apps, I can recommend using time in status custom fields, which is one of the features of the Time in Status by SaaSJet app(I am part of this team).

You can create a custom field to measure time in the current status (column on the board) or create time metrics to calculate Lead time, Cycle time, Resolution time, etc. for each individual work item.

You can also add your custom work schedules to these fields, and all calculations will be based solely on your working hours, excluding weekends, breaks, etc.

I hope you find this useful!

Hey @Zoe N.

The "Days in column" feature is specific to Jira Software's Scrum and Kanban boards. Unfortunately, it is not available for boards in company-managed Business projects.

If you need to track how long a work item sits in a specific status for these projects, a Marketplace app is the best alternative. Timepiece - Time in Status for Jira handles this requirement perfectly.
You can use its Status Duration report. Instead of just a visual indicator on a card, this report gives you the precise time (in days, hours, or minutes) that every issue has spent in each status of your workflow.

image-20251203-091531.png

Key advantages over the native feature:

It works for Business Projects: It is not limited to Software boards.
It's More Accurate: While "Days in column" counts 24/7, Timepiece lets you use Custom Calendars to count only working days/hours, giving you a true picture of delays.
Dashboard Gadgets: You can create dashboards to track status duration and share it with teammates easily.

To learn more about Timepiece, check it out on the Atlassian Marketplace. Hope this helps.

Full disclosure, I'm on the team that makes Timepiece - Time in Status for Jira.

Hi @Zoe N.,

I’m afraid this isn’t possible in team-managed business projects.

However, if you’re open to using an app from the Atlassian Marketplace, I’d recommend trying the WIP Aging Chart gadget from our Great Gadgets app.

This gadget can display issues from a board, filter, or JQL by their age, and it allows you to configure different aging criteria such as time in column, time in status, time in status category, etc.

image.png

While this gadget cannot use the board of that business project (due to Jira REST API limitations), you can configure it with a filter/JQL that returns the issues from the board and calculate their age based on the time in the current status, in days.

image.png

As a result, you will get a chart showing the statuses on x-axis (To Do, In Progress, ...) and the issues in each status by their age on y-axis. If you have only one status mapped on a board column, this will work just like "Days in column" feature.

Hope this helps.

Hi Sophia - Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

Business projects/spaces are very limited when it comes to the configurations of the board. If you want/need to be able to set WIP Limits for columns in the Kanban board, you need to use a Jira Software Company-managed project/space.

Hei John, I feard that this would be the answere. But thank you for your quit response. I will keep this in mind for future projects. BR

If you would like to create a second board, here is an article that will walk you through it. And yes, you can work in the second board.
