Custom field using select list (single choice)

andrew mccollum January 23, 2024

I'm currently using a select list (single choice) custom field to allowed users to enter a number between 1-20 as a simple method for them to rank internal priority score. Its a company managed project so i dont want to abuse the priority field more than everyone else already has.

Is there a way to do the following?

1. Make each choice unique so that there can only be 1 of each number associated to a ticket while its open.

2. When a ticket closes the number updates. e.g. we close out a ticket ranked 4, so every number greater than 4 decreases by 1/moves them up the rankings

Hi Nic,

The board has been setup with the swimlanes set to epics so the team can differentiate between the workstreams so the ranking only works within that epic from what i can discern. The aim secondary score will allow the visibility on what the company priority items are from the current workload.

I'll have a look to see if the JSM and queues could be a better fit for this.

Cheers,
Andy

Hi Andrew,

What you are describing here is a function that Atlassian discarded very shortly after acquiring what is now "Jira Software".  They replaced it with a proper ranking system.

You could implement the prioritisation scheme you describe, but it will be prone to error, and it fails miserably to scale.

You have flagged this as "Jira Software", so you should have access to ranking.  Is there a reason you are not using that?  (If you're using JSM, you would be looking for Queues and SLAs rather than ranking)
