Create issue error in Internet Explorer: Jira server could not be contacted

I get an error creating an issue sub-task in Internet Explorer:

"The Jira server could not be contacted. This may be a temporary glitch or the server may be down."

Then the browser debugger window has the following message:

XMLHttpRequest: Network Error 0x2eff, Could not complete the operation due to error 00002eff

I know that I.E. is no longer supported, but didn't think that a basic action such as this would fail.
