Convert a story to a task

I am new to JIRA and have inherited a very messy board which I am trying to clean up. Is there an easy way to convert a story to a task? I only seem to have the option of story or epic in the type dropdown

You can only directly "edit" an issue type to a type that is configured in the same way as the current type.

If you use "move" and select the same project, you'll be able to move it to any other issue type of the same class (i.e. parent or sub-task).  If you are trying to convert between the two classes (e.g. story is a parent and task is a sub-task type), then the actions menu on the issue will have "convert to <other>" on it.

This does all depend on your "issue type scheme" for your project having the relevant issue types of course.  You can't convert to an issue type that is not there in the project!
