Confluence error : Grant "application access" to a user

Under User Management I am trying to grant Application access for JIRA Core to a user but receive the attached error. What should I do?

The user that has been configured to talk to your LDAP system does not have the permissions in there to amend this Jira user's groups.

You'll need to get the right permissions for the directory.

You must be a registered user to add a comment. If you've already registered, sign in. Otherwise, register and sign in.

If I would have taken a better look I would have noticed he was missing an obvious group membership. For future reference how do I find that directory??
