Cannot get JIRA::REST to work

I have a very small Perl ap, something like

use JIRA::REST;

my $J = JIRA::REST->new( { credentials } );

my $issue = $J->GET( '/issue/XX-1234');

The "new" seems to work. I'm not sure how to tell if I actually authenticated though.

But when it does the "GET", the code adds directories to the path, and it errors saying "/rest/api/latest/issue/XX-1234 was not found".

I'm not sure how to proceed. Does this mean our JIRA system doesn't have REST API resources? Or am I making this call wrong? How can I tell if the resources are there?

TY
