Cannot create a new issue using excel and the JIRA excel connector

Excel 2013 with jira-excel connector installed

Jira 6.1 server

When trying to create a new issue in excel the 'Reporter' field is black, meaning it is an 'auto generated field' and cannot be edited by the user.

When pressing the '+' Create button an error dialog appears saying 'Reporter is required'.

These two are mutually inconsitent, you cannot require the user to enter a read-only field.

Clearly this works for some people, so please tell me what I'm doing wrong, or how to do it right.
