Cancelled stories in backlog was committed to in sprint

During sprint planning I had cancelled several stories in the backlog. Cancelled status translates to "Done/Resolved" in my workflow. They usually drop off my backlog. I was surprised to find out the stories showed in my active sprint after I clicked start sprint. The sprint report now shows them as being "Resolved outside of the sprint". It's throwing a wrench into my agility metrics as a result.

Can this be corrected? How does somebody prevent this going forward?

My guess is that you canceled these while they were in a future sprint. At that point, they will disappear from your board, but will still have the sprint in their Sprint field.

Then, when that future sprint becomes active, since the canceled items are still associated with that sprint, they show up again.

You can try clearing out the Sprint field if the sprint is still active, although I don't know the exact impact this will have on your sprint report (my guess is that they will show up in the 'issues removed from sprint' section.

To prevent this from happening again, make sure that you remove all of the canceled items from the sprint before canceling them, or clear out the Sprint value before starting that sprint.
