Can you use target end date instead of due date in a board's timeline view?
In the new Timeline view on a board, the only option to visualize the end of an issue seems to be the Due Date. It would be nice if we could use Target End date as we can with the Timeline Plan view. Is this an enhancement or am I missing something?

Are you on a team-managed or company-managed account?
I found a (somewhat) relevant post around the nuances of start / end dates here as it relates to team- vs. company-managed. Essentially, team-managed projects let you choose a start / due date that are custom to each team-managed project. BUT.... to answer your question, you do indeed need a due date.
It sounds like you want a less-committal, public-facing "target due date" so that you're not saying your team will 100% have something ready by that date.
A workaround you can use is Visor's free Jira roadmap / Gantt tool. (Full disclosure: I work at Visor.)
Visor lets you roadmap with your Jira data and add custom fields (like due dates) that don't actually live in Jira but that enrich your Jira data. You can also share these roadmaps with whoever you please AND they help bypass a lot of the Timeline's restrictions (e.g., you can drill down to subtask level + import more than one project). This might help you create a roadmap that is ready for public consumption.
TLDR: you do need due dates to chart a roadmap. I don't believe you can change the name of what "due date" is in Jira. But you can add custom fields in Visor that don't live in Jira and share roadmaps that way.
