Can you restrict an editable datepicker to only future dates?

We have a datepicker, Estimated Completion Date. We enforce that it is >= today on transitions, but it is editable on the view and users have accidentally pick a date in the past.

Is there a simple way to prevent the user from setting this field to a date in the past?

Obvious work-arounds include not having it editable on the view and providing a workflow transition "Edit EstCmplDate" with a validator, but that seems like overkill and we hope for a simpler solution

Any ideas?
