Can you filter assignee based on project role

I want to make the assignee list be based on a project role.  Is there an easy way to set this up that I am missing?

In your "Permission Scheme", update the permission called "Assignable Users" so that only your desired project role can be assigned to your project issues.

I suspect he also wants to limit it based on workflow status. Scripting may be able to do that
