Hello,

I cannot access Jira via my 6 digit access code granted by Authenticator. Can you help me how  to set this up once again? for my login today I used my emergency 24 digit key, which I presume is not a sustainable / recommended approach for my future logins..

Hi @Jakob Berner Strømberg

Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

Since you've successfully signed in, I suggest reconfiguring your two-step verification. You can do this from your Atlassian account security settings.

https://id.atlassian.com/manage-profile/security

From there, you should be able to set up a new authenticator app on your current device. Once it's configured, you'll again use the 6-digit code generated by the app for future logins.

If you don't see the option to reconfigure two-step verification, or if your account is managed by your organization, you'll need to contact your organization administrator or Atlassian Support for assistance.

Atlassian's documentation on managing two-step verification may also be helpful:

Hi @Jakob Berner Strømberg ,

Since you've already used your recovery key to log in today, here's how to reset your two-step verification and set up a new authenticator app:

Steps to recover and reconfigure your 2FA

  1. Log out of your Atlassian account.
  2. On the login screen, enter your email and password. When prompted for the 6-digit verification code, select "Use recovery key?"
  3. Then select "Can't find your recovery key?"
  4. Select "Send recovery email" — you'll receive a first email with the subject: "Steps to recover your Atlassian account". This email does not contain the access link yet.
  5. Wait 24 hours — after that, you'll receive a second email with a one-time link that will take you directly to your 2FA settings, where you can disable it or register your new authenticator app.

Important: Check your inbox 24 hours after receiving the first email. The link in the second email expires quickly and can only be used once.

After you regain access
Once you're in, go to Atlassian Account Security Settings and set up your new authenticator app under Two-step verification.

Official Atlassian guide
For the full walkthrough, refer to Atlassian's official documentation:

About the 24-digit recovery key
You're right — using the recovery key every time is not recommended as a long-term solution. It's meant as an emergency backup. Once you complete the steps above and re-register a new authenticator, make sure to save your new recovery key in a safe place.

Hope this helps!
