Can't create an issues in an epic

I'm struggling to create issues within an epic. I've created the epic but when I select '' the issue created doesn't seem to have any link to the parent epic. When I search by parentEpic only the epic itself is returned. I've had to link the issues as 'related to' the epic, however I can't seem to make a query that pulls up all of the issues linked to the epic even after manually linking them.

Do you find the option highlighted - 'create issue in epic' in the epic?

Or from the issue, you can use 'epic link' field to link to the parent epic

parentEpic only looks to return a result for the Epic itself, and not any children of said epic.

This looks like a bug.
