So stories are displayed across all the columns and the subtasks are moved from column to column.
Is it possible to move a story through workflow columns? If I have all the subtasks moved to a certain column can the story then be displayed as being in that same column?

Actually, Stories can be moved in a board by simply dragging and dropping them in your board columns. The only requirement to accomplish that is the board columns must be mapped with the respective statuses of the Story.
In order to better understand your request, could you please provide us a screenshot showing exactly what you are trying to do?
About your second answer, It's not possible to automatically transition a parent issue when all its sub-tasks are transitioned, however, there's a plugin which provides you with this functionality: Automation for JIRA

I'm able to manually change the status but the story still appears across all stages. This is largely a visual thing but it would be nice if the story appeared across the columns where the subtasks existed or at least started in the column where the story status is set at.
Does that make sense?
