Can Jira sprint burndown chart be based on a filter instead of a sprint?

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to use the Jira sprint burndown chart, but instead of tying it to a specific sprint, I’d like to generate it based on a saved filter (for example, all issues for a specific release or cross-team initiative).

Right now, it seems that the chart only works when a sprint is selected from a Scrum board. I can’t find an option to base it on a custom filter or any non-sprint data source.

Is there any way to configure the sprint burndown chart in Jira to work outside of sprint context, or is it strictly limited to sprint-based reporting?

Hi @John Phillips

Welcome to the Atlassian Community.

The Sprint Burndown Chart is sprint-based and tied to a Scrum board sprint. It cannot be configured to run from a saved filter, release, or issue set outside of the sprint context. It helps to monitor whether they are on track to complete sprint commitments.

You can also see the availability for the third-party plugins.

See this documentation also.

Hi @John Phillips,

Welcome to the community!

It is not possible to create a burndown based on a custom filter by using Jira's native tools.

But if you are open to try an app (plugin) from Atlassian Marketplace, you can easily do this by using the Release Burndown Burnup Chart gadget offered by our Great Gadgets app.

This gadget can generate burndown or burnup based on a filter or JQL, works with any type of estimates and can also make a forecast based on velocity and scope change ratio.

It is perfect for tracking releases or cross-team initiatives.

Hi @John Phillips

You’re right. The Sprint Burndown Chart only works for sprints and is linked to a Scrum board.
As an alternative, I’d recommend using AI Apps Builder for Jira to create your own custom burndown-style dashboard. With AI Apps Builder, you can explain exactly what you need in the chat. AI generates a custom report from a simple prompt. This approach gives you a lot more flexibility than the standard sprint report.
I’ve collected some examples of reports made this way, including the prompts and first results, here:
You can also watch a video to see how AI Apps Builder works in practice.

Hope this helps.

Hi, @Bill Sheboy

Thank you for the reminder. You’re absolutely right. I usually mention that I work on AI Apps Builder, but I forgot to add that disclosure in this post. Thanks for pointing it out. I’ll make sure to include a clear note about my affiliation in future recommendations.
I appreciate you helping keep the community transparent and following the guidelines.
Best regards

Hello @John Phillips

Welcome to the Atlassian community.

No, it is not possible to change the configuration of the Sprint Burndown to report on anything other than a Sprint.

There is already a burndown report for Releases.

https://support.atlassian.com/jira-software-cloud/docs/what-is-the-release-burndown-report/

There is a change request for an Initiative Burndown Report to which you can add your vote:

https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRACLOUD-88166

Beyond that I think you would need to consider third party apps that provide more reporting options. Are you open to getting a third party app to meet this requirement? I found a few when searching the Atlassian Marketplace. I have not used any of these apps so I don't have a specific recommendation.
