Can I turn off the Epic functionality?

Is it possible to turn off the Epic functionality? I do not intend to use it for a while yet and it is confusing users.

Our developers and product managers looked at adding this functionality, but as you can see in the long discussion about it, in the end, the PM's have decided that this is not the best solution:

At this time, there is not a way to disable the Epic functionality.
