Can I restrict adding only Epics that are open to an issue?

I am wasting a lot of time cross- referencing whether Epics are open or not when I add them to issues- is there a way to filter to show only EPICs that are open when doing the link from an issue create/update screen?  Also is there a way to show a list of EPICS and show how many Open Issues are linked to them?

I'm not aware of a way to hide Closed Epics when adding Epic Link field to other issue types.

List of Epics with open stories - I'm not aware of a view that will show you exactly this, the closest I can think of are:

a) The Epic panel on the Backlog view of an Agile board.  (But it shows Story Points rather than issue count)

b) A filter showing open issues, including an 'Epic Link' column.  As of a few weeks ago, Epic Link is now a sortable field so their open child issues will be grouped once sorted.
