Can I auto start and complete Sprints in Jira Cloud?

Syd Heller

I am looking for a way to automatically have Sprints start and complete (as explained here: https://confluence.atlassian.com/jirasoftwareserver/configuring-a-sprint-to-auto-start-and-auto-complete-1235848794.html) in my Jira Software Cloud instance. Is that possible?

If it's not possible, I'd like to suggest it gets implemented - this feels like a pretty core functionality and quality of life improvement.

Hi @Syd Heller

That is not a built-in capability for Jira Cloud.  It may be possible with marketplace addons, and it is definitely possible using an automation rule to call the REST API functions for sprint management.

However, some of the reporting in Jira is very picky about sprint contents for starting / completing.  And so taking that control away from the delivery teams when they perform sprint planning (to start sprints) and completing (to decide what to do with remaining issues) may lead to unintended consequences: bent or broken reporting, lower quality data to learn from, less team autonomy / accountability, etc.  Please consider these things before trying to automation the sprints.

Kind regards,
Bill

Hi @Syd Heller@Marko Blagus, I know i am 2 years late, but it is possible now. You can check out Auto Sprint Start Stop by PgM Innovations. It can be used to automate 100s of boards.

Hello @Syd Heller,

That article is for Server and DC, as I can see you're using Cloud?

It's available for these two but can't find that article for Cloud so I think it's not possible.

Best regards,

Marko Blagus
