Best Practice for Epics

Wondering what is best practice for epics.

I'm assuming they act as a "container" per se to hold stories, tasks, subtasks, etc, and therefore their status shouldn't really change during the progression of the cases inside of it. I would think the epic status only needs to have an beginning (open) and ending (close) status for their workflow. 

what is the thought on this.
