While I understand conceptually what these metrics are and do, I don't fully understand how the gadgets behave. In resolution time, when I set the period to weekly the resolution time/time to resolution increases, whereas setting the period to monthly/quarterly dramatically reduces resolution time.
Similar variation happens on the average age metric.
Can anyone weigh in or help me to understand why this is?
Hello Stacy,
Resolution Time gadget shows the average time of resolution. I believe most of your issues have similar resolution times but you probably have some issues on some specific days that have resolution times far above the average.
When you group the gadget by days, those issues will increase the average of some specific days only and those days will stand out in the chart. When you group by weeks, those issues will increase the average of the whole week but since they are processed with a higher number of issues (a week of issues compared to a day) their effect will be lower and so will the average. When you group by months, the effect should be even lower.
Resolution time gadget does not allow you to inspect individual issues. For this need, our team at OBSS created Time in Status app for Jira. You might want to check it out.
Time in Status by OBSS allows you see how much time each issue spent on each status or on each assignee. You can get averages of issues or consolidate statuses into a single column to see metrics like Lead Time or Cycle Time (coming soon to Jira Server). Export the data as Excel or CSV.
