We have been looking for the answer to this question for some time:
We always have applicants enter an expected release date in the Jira Form, so we know when the applicant expects us to have completed the application and sent everything out. For this we have created a custom field so that the expected release date is shown in our queues. Now we would like to link this to the 'Due Date' shown to the right of the ticket when you open the ticket, so that we can develop a queue based on this as well. Is this possible with automation?

Yes, that is possible.
You can create an Automation rule triggered by a change to the "expected release date" field, and edit the issue to copy that data to the "due date" field.
