Automated dates for stories

I was under the impression a story start date is automatically added when the story is pulled into a sprint and end date when the story status is changed to done or complete? Is this a false assumption?

Hi @[deleted] -- Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

That is an incorrect assumption.

It is possible to set the Start Date, or other fields, using various methods, such as workflow or automation rules.  From what you described, using automation rules may be better as they could be triggered on Sprint Started or changes to specific issue fields.
