I'm currently using the post function to automatically assign an issue to the user who moves it to the status of "In Progress," but I don't want to do that if the issue is already assigned to someone else. Is there a way to check before auto-assigning?

Thanks for the answer. That's exactly what I did. There is a slight UI delay when using the automation vs. using the transition, but it will work fine. Thanks again!
