Hi everyone,

I’m seeking help with an issue I’m facing while trying to log in to JIRA in recovery mode.

After gathering information from the community and JIRA documentation, I successfully started JIRA in recovery mode. The login screen confirms this with the message:

“Jira is running in recovery mode. You can log in as recovery_admin, using the password specified when starting Jira. See the documentation for more details.”

Here’s the relevant line from my setenv.bat file (I’m using a Windows environment):

set JVM_SUPPORT_RECOMMENDED_ARGS="-Datlassian.recovery.password=1q2w3e4r5t6y7u8i9o"

The issue: Despite having the correct password for recovery_admin (1q2w3e4r5t6y7u8i9o), logins are not working. When I attempt to log in, the following entries appear in the atlassian-jira-security.log:

However, nothing happens on the screen—I remain stuck on the login page with the user/password fields still displayed.

When I intentionally enter the wrong password, the log shows:

2024-09-27 11:29:29,739-0500 http-nio-8090-exec-6 anonymous 689x50x1 - 10.159.5.203 /rest/gadget/1.0/login login : 'recovery_admin' tried to login but they do not have USE permission or weren't found. Deleting remember me cookie.
2024-09-27 11:29:29,740-0500 http-nio-8090-exec-6 anonymous 689x50x1 - 10.159.5.203 /rest/gadget/1.0/login The user 'recovery_admin' has FAILED authentication. Failure count equals 1

Does anyone have any hints on how to recover the admin password for my JIRA instance? I’m using version v8.9.0#809000-sha1:4ceb90a (on-prem).

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi @CrazySpy ! Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

Generally you use Recovery Mode to set a new admin password if you've forgotten the admin password.

But as far as recovery_admin not able to see anything after authentication, what does the main atlassian-jira.log show?
