The Assigned to Me Gadget is on my dashboard.  I thought it's supposed to include only open items, but it's showing closed items too.  How can I exclude those?

Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

The assigned-to-me gadget has a simple fixed query behind it - Assignee = me and resolution is empty.

Your "closed" issues may have a closed status, but an inexperienced admin has set up a workflow that allows you to close issues without setting the necessary resolution.

You'll need to get the workflow fixed, and then look at how many issues are affected to see what the best way to correct your broken issues are.

Search for "status in (<all status you want to see as closed>) and resolution is empty.  If you find a handful, you can re-open and then re-close them.  If it's a lot, then you'll want to be looking to bulk edits during a quiet time, or scripting (I wouldn't be doing my job if I didn't point out that our Scriptrunner has a built-in script for fixing closed but unresolved  issues)
