I have seen a few forum posts regarding this, but none really answer my question.

I am trying to use Story Points for a task, but I am currently unable to assign them.

I have checked the following:

As you see this is enabled.

Under space settings though under fields, I can see Story Points isn't assigned to any screens. I'm assuming this is the issue. But I don't see anyway of adjusting this.

Some help would be appreciated

Thanks

Grant

Hi @Grant Smith

If it’s a company-managed project, the most likely reason is that the Story Points field hasn’t been added to the issue screens used by the project.

An admin can fix this by going to Jira Settings -> Issues -> Screens, opening the screen used by the project (Create/Edit/View), and adding the Story Points field. Once it’s added to the screen, you should be able to set story points on the issue.

Thanks again for helping. I appear to of made progress, in that Story Points appears to added to screens now.

But, in spaces, board, I still can't add points to a task? The small grey box just will not allow me to edit it, works if its a story, which is expected.

Go to Jira Settings -> Work Item -> Field configurations, open the configuration used by the space, and make sure Story Points is not hidden for the Task work type.

I only appear to have one configuration.

And the Story Points appear to be available.

Are you using the same screen (Create/Edit/View screens) for all work types, or different screens for different work types?

@Grant Smith Please check the Story Points field context under Jira Settings -> Work items -> Custom fields -> Story Points -> Contexts and default values, to make sure it’s enabled for the Task issue type, since by default it’s often only available for Stories/Epics.Screenshot 2026-03-13 020823.png

Found it in a slightly different location. Jira admin settings -> Work Items -> Field configurations -> Story Points -> Configure Custom Field

Hi @Grant Smith

If you’re using a team-managed project in Jira Cloud, the “0 screens” message is normal because screens aren’t used to manage fields in this project type.

Instead, go to Project settings -> Issue types -> select the issue type -> Add field -> “Story point estimate”, as team-managed projects use Story point estimate rather than the classic Story Points field.
