Are tasks considered when calculating velocity ?

divya January 16, 2022

Considering a scenario where, user stories are estimated in 'story points' and tasks are estimated in 'hours',

1 - Are tasks included and calculated under velocity?

2. If yes, how is the velocity calculated, since the unit of estimation is diff for user story and task?

Welcome to the Community!

You have not said what your "tasks" are exactly - are they issue level types or are they sub-tasks?

If they are sub-tasks, then they are part of their parent story and not things you measure velocity against, because you don't commit to doing them in your sprint, you only commit to delivery of stories.

Hi @divya

Welcome to the Community!!

Before we get into the discussion, I want to highlight when you start with a fresh instance of Jira, the context for Story Points is only for Story and Epic Issue types.

Task issue types can be estimated with Story Points and they will show up in Velocity Chart, provided you need to add the context for Task issue type an estimation should be added before starting the sprint.

There will be no difference, it will be collective when displaying the chart!!

Thanks,
Pramodh
