Approval stage with customised fields

I have an existing workflow that I now need to add an approval stage to. The approvers will need to complete a number of customised fields which I would like to present to them similar to a transition screen (this needs to be more than a simple Accept/Decline approval). My workflow has 3 stages A,B,C - The approval stage needs to sit between B and C (where C also includes the resolution). The approvers can be managed by a user group.

Is there a way that I can automatically assign the approval stage to a user group and then once complete the issue returns to the current assignee? Can I do this without creating a subtask with conditions and post functions attached?
