Is it possible to create links between instances of different versions? Are there any combinations which simply don't work?

JIRA (6.x) -> JIRA (5.2)

Confluence (5.x) -> Confluence (3.x) - I totally expect issues here.

You can connect different versions. Confluence 3.x should also work but I am not sure about old versions.

https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/APPLINKS/Application+Links+Version+Matrix talks only about 3.5.x though but I suggest you test it.

I appreciate the link. I did call Atlassian and they confirmed that 3.5 is the cut-off.
