Anyone know how to add a new status to Jira workflow?

I am running Atlassian Cloud Jira. I found this article but it applies to on-prem:

My team needs to have the status of "Waiting" as a project status. Does anyone here know how to add that to my workflow in Atlassian Cloud?

For company managed projects on Cloud, the same actions as described in the article still apply.
