Ammend an existing workflow

Hi Team 

Here is the scenario 

I have an exsiting Project which has a workflow W1 and there are 300 different issues like stories, improvements, bugs etc 

Now I want to add few more steps in the workflow . 

When I add the steps and then try to publish it , the window comes about asking issues impacted etc. 

I do not want existing issues status or anything to get impacted. 

all I need is few more steps in the workflow which can be used to map  if required

How to safely do this without impacting existing issues and their statuses

If you are only adding statuses to the workflow, then there will be no impact to the existing issues.

The only time issues would be impacted is if you are removing a status that existing issues are in. Then, when you publish the changes, you would be required to map the old statuses to one of the existing statuses in the workflow.
