Adding fields to Group By dropdown in "List" or "All Work" screens

Maria Flores July 25, 2025

Hello

We have had Jira Standard for our Engineering teams for around a decade, but Product has been using a different product for their planning. We are migrating from that product to Jira Premium.

The other product does "Group By" for reporting with extreme ease and we have many reports with grouping up to 3 levels deep.

In Jira not only is nesting for groups not available but also the list in the Group dropdowns is very limited. Is there a way to add entries to the Group dropdowns in "List" and/or "All Work" screens?

Is there a Jira extension that would be recommended to allow us to do those things?

Thanks for any help!

Thanks to both. This is very disappointing.
Grouping is such a widely used feature it is surprising Jira does not provide this.

Hi @Maria Flores

If I understood correctly, you are looking to organise work items in cascaded/nested groupings.

It sounds like you're open to solutions from the Atlassian Marketplace, so you may want to have a look at the app that my team and I are working on, JXL for Jira.

JXL is a full-fledged spreadsheet/table view for your Jira data that allows viewing, inline-editing, copy-pasting, sorting, and filtering by all your work items' fields, much like you’d do in e.g. Excel, Google Sheets, Smartsheet, or Airtable.

It also comes with a long list of handy features, including grouping by any and all fields (and other non-field data related to work items) and highly customisable work item structures. These custom structures in JXL sheets enable you to create bespoke organisations of work items, made up of any desired combination and depth of hierarchy, grouping, and sum-up levels. It's very straightforward to set up multiple nested groupings and save that into a sharable view.

I should also add that nested grouping play nicely in combination with all the other JXL features, such as configurable hierarchy, sum-ups, conditional formatting, and much more.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Daniel

Hello @Maria Flores

There currently is no capability to customize the options available in the Group feature on the List tab. I was not able to find a change request for that in the public Atlassian backlog at https://jira.atlassian.com/secure/MyJiraHome.jspa

I'm not aware of an extension that will modify those options within Jira Cloud, but that doesn't mean there isn't one. The ability for vendors to modify native widgets in Jira Cloud is somewhat limited by whether or not Atlassian has provided an API that would allow the vendors to do that.

You may find that you will need a third party app that provides more complex and sophisticated reporting capabilities.
