Accessing JIRA via proxy sends user credentials as cleartext

We have setup access to JIRA via proxy so that users can connect to JIRA instance without logging in to VPN. Unfortunately, it appears as if the data transfer happens in cleartext which means user credentials are in cleartext.

How can we secure the data transfer?

Please advise ASAP.

It would require setting up apache but, the idea is to have https/ssl configured to secure the traffic.
