Hi guys,

I keep getting a 502 gateway error and cannot seem to find any issues on the server.

When restarting the service, it looks like it wants to start up with addons, but then bombs out

Any suggestions on where to start?

Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

A 502 is usually a simple proxy error - there's a machine in between you and the server passing data between the two of you, but it's not getting anything back from the Jira server when it's passed your last message to it.  So, as you've already worked out, the problem is going to be on the Jira server

You say that's starting up ok, but bombing during the initialisation, so the first thing to look at is the application log, reading backwards from the time it bombs.  The last set of errors in there should tell you why it's bombed

But they can be cryptic and don't use plain English like "out of memory" or "couldn't find a file I need", so feel free to repeat them here at us, there's usually someone around who can translate them into human.
