We’re Exploring Showing All Work Items in Jira Software Timeline

We’re looking into updating the Jira Software Timeline to display all work items, not just those with a parent (epic).

This change would help teams see the full picture of their work across all hierarchy levels in one place.

Before we make this update, we’d love to hear from you. If you use Jira Timeline in Software project regularly and managing a list of work items without Epic, we’d like to speak with you.

📅 What: 45-minute user interview
💬 Why: To understand how you plan and track work on the Timeline
👤 Who: Jira Software Timeline users (not Plans)

If you’re interested, please contact me directly here or leave your email in the comment section.

I would love to participate, and ask my colleagues to do so as well, but there is a bit of a time zone related obstacle.
The only hours we can book is around midnight or 3 in the morning.

But in general it would be great to be able to view work items without parents in the Timeline

It would also be very good to be able to view the full work type hierarchy in the Timeline.
So not only the Epic, Story, Sub Task levels, but also any levels we may have above Epic.

Being able to view any work item links would also be great.

@Rune Rasmussen - I hear you! Can you tell me your time zone?

Would love to get some great insights from you as we are exploring full work type hierarchy and view work items without parents. Can you give me your email so that I can sent you a questionnaire?

@Amy Cheong I, and most of my colleagues, are in CET/GMT+1 (Benelux, Denmark, Norway, Sweden), and others are in GMT+2 (Finland).

I don't know if any of us are interested in participating, but Clevyr's PMO uses timeline view a lot, and they're in favor of showing the full hierarchy.

This sounds like a useful update! Being able to see all work items at every level would definitely make planning and tracking much more transparent. Clear organization and visibility are key — just like in production workflows where every detail matters. Platforms like My Apparel Clothing Manufacturing
highlight how structured processes and full visibility help ensure high-quality output across all stages.

Being able to visualize items with no Parent on the timeline would be great and very useful. @Amy Cheong, is this being explored for Jira Enterprise and Premium only or would it also apply to Jira Standard?

Hello, Amy — thank you! This is fantastic to hear and would bring tremendous value to our teams as we manage multiple projects, releases, and workstreams across a project/space within the standard Timeline.

I’d be honored to meet, collaborate, and walk through a few Timeline examples from our portfolio (including how we’re evolving our approach leveraging Plans as well). However, expanding these capabilities directly within Timeline would have an immediate and meaningful impact on our teams and delivery.

Regards,

Matt -- matt.leatham@belden.com

@Simon Bundgaard I am exploring this for Jira standard project timeline users (all Jira Business and Software project users).

Love to talk, as we have many projects that don't really use epics: shane.kelly@ateel.com
