Preview Panels will soon replace the detail view in Jira’s Global Search and List views

We’re excited to announce a more convenient and efficient experience to preview your work in Jira.

A new preview panel experience is coming to Jira’s global search and List views that will replace the detail view.

⏱️ A more efficient way to preview work quickly

Previewing work and related context is slow and disruptive today, forcing you to bounce between full-screen views or open multiple new tabs just to gather the information you need.

Preview panels in the List will cut that friction by letting you open work items and related content inline to quickly scan details, read linked Confluence pages, and take action without ever losing your place in the List view.

By keeping you in context while you review and act on work, we’ll make it easier to understand dependencies, reduce tab overload, and speed up everyday workflows.

✨ What’s changing

Detail view is going away

When using Jira’s global search or List view, you could toggle between the List and detail view.

                                                         

The detail view let you quickly preview work by opening the selected item on the right-hand side. You could jump into the detail view to see more information about a work item, then switch back to the List to continue browsing other results.

The new default will be the preview panel experience

The new preview panel will make it easier to preview work directly from the List and Global Search views, without relying on the old detail view.

You’ll be able to quickly scan all the work items that match your filter or apply sorting, and then select an item to open a side panel. The panel will be resizable, or viewable in a full-screen view when deeper focus is needed.

The preview panel will also support previewing Confluence pages, Projects, and Goals, reducing the need to constantly open and manage new browser tabs.

17 June 2026: Mid-rollout Update

Hi all,

First off, we're sorry. We removed something that mattered to your daily workflows- the ability to open a work item with enough space to see the necessary context, and quickly step through your list of work items, before we'd shipped a proper replacement. That's on us, and the timing took some of you by surprise.

Here's what we're doing about it

We've paused the rollout for new users while we build two changes that will address the needs you've shared with us.

1. A work item modal. From the preview panel, you'll be able to open a work item in a modal that gives you more room to see the context you need, without navigating away from the List or Global Search views.

2. Navigation arrows. In both the preview panel and the modal, you'll be able to move through work items one by one, without losing your place in the List or Global Search views. These work alongside the existing J and K keyboard shortcuts.

How we'll handle changes like this going forward
Changes that affect how you work day-to-day belong in our seasonal releases, a cadence that gives you plenty of notice ahead of time so you and your teams can prepare. This change should have gone through that process. We chose to move quickly to close a feature gap between the old and new Lists rather than have you wait, but a change this fundamental to your workflows warranted the notice that seasonal releases provide. Going forward, changes like this will be part of our seasonal releases.

30 June 2026: Addressing Your Feedback

Hi everyone,

We've started releasing the modal and the navigation arrows via phased rollouts (if you don't have them yet, you will very shortly).

You now get to choose how you view your work in the List, in a modal or the Preview Panel. 

A few notes on the work item modal:

• It looks and works the same way as the modals on other Jira views (for example, the Board)
• It shows both work item columns side-by-side, rather than stacking them, which happened in the Preview Panel on small screens (e.g. 14") and at narrow widths, and created a cumbersome experience
• To open the modal for the first time, use the button in the top right of the Preview Panel. Your choice to view your work in the modal or the Preview Panel will persist across Jira views within the same session, so if you view a work item in a modal on the Board, opening one on the List will automatically open it in a modal too.

We're still working on making that choice persist across separate Jira sessions. Some of you have said an extra button is still extra clicks. Once cross-session persistence lands, your choice becomes your default and you won't be doubling up on clicks each time. We wanted to first roll out the modal to give you the choice of how you view your work items, and the persistence piece is coming soon.

Notes on the arrows:

• You'll find these in the top right of the work item, whether you open it in the Preview Panel or the modal. You can still use the J and K keyboard shortcuts.

We'd love to hear how you're getting on with the new features, so please do share.

Last but not least, on deprecating the Detail view: across our feedback sources, we've heard concern that the modal and arrows may not support every workflow the Detail view did. We're looking into that separately to understand where any gaps are, and we'll come back to you with the direction we're taking. Hold tight for a little longer (and thank you for your patience so far!).

5 August - Another improvement is on the way

Hi everyone,

Thank you for continuing to share your feedback. We're continuing to work through implementing improvements to address it.

We've now increased the max width of the preview panel

• For screen sizes 1280px to 1536px, it will enable viewing both columns on the work item side-by-side, plus
• For screen sizes 1537px and above, it provides more space to view the relevant work item details, and help to prevent tab sprawl by reducing the need to open the work item in a new tab.

This change is rolling out at the moment (and if you don't have it yet, you will very shortly). We know that expanding the width of the panel compresses content on the List view, but if there's other challenges this change creates, please let us know.

Recapping on the previous message about options to view work items
Rather than a toggle to manage, we've enabled choice in the experience through persistence. How you view work items on the List and across other Jira views (e.g. the Board) will persist. If you last viewed a modal on the Board and came to the List, you'll see the work item in a modal. If it was in a preview panel, you'll see it in a preview panel. If you want to view the work item full screen, you can continue to use Cmd or Ctrl + click, or right-click to open it in a new tab.

For some of you, the widened panel, modal, and arrows may not fully replace what the Detail view offered. We're continuing to consider that alongside the broader feedback, and hearing what's working well, where it's not quite hitting the mark, and how you're moving through your work directly informs what we do next. Quick question - would the URL bar change if an item is open in the panel? Currently, the URL bar shows something like this if i open an item from a filter:

Once the context in the preview panel goes live showing issues and Confluence pages, etc, it would be nice to be able to send links like this so people see exactly what we see.

Will the new width stay the same each time you open a new preview after you resize it? I'm hoping you're storing this info in user profile properties so it doesn't open at the default width every time.

And ditto @Yatish Madhav 's question about the URL. I've seen many people sending around links like the one Yatish mentioned to reference a particular work item. So we need to know that the URL bar when the preview panel is open will still reference that work item.

This is a welcome change. I never use this detailed view from within search/list. When I'm searching/listing I'm looking at the work at a planning level and scanning for discrepancies and relationships. That detailed view hiding the columns hindered that objective.

RE: URL Deep Links

Keeping a consistent URL, that's important. One of the core value propositions of Jira, as it is easy to be send a links to collogues that when used, mean they see exactly what I had open.  When I'm forced to use other tools that don't have this (looking at you ServiceNow), and I need to waste time writing out a description of steps to get to the same view, I immediately feel rage.

Feedback from using this preview view.

I have a habit of `ctrl+click` (or middle mouse button) to cherry pick a batch of work item into new tabs. I do this as a way of planning out work for the hour/day. I then step through each tab, execute the task, then `ctrl+tab` to get to the next tab, and do what I need to do there. This new view makes that way of working harder as I found that the preview would pops up, rather than opening a new tab, but with the new inline editing in search/list view, and bulk change being more user friendly, I've less need to do this. It'll force focus, but multi taskers will hate this.

Will the URL reflect that the work item is opened in a preview panel?
Yes. The "&selectedIssue={issueKey}" query parameter will be added to the url. The people you share the URL link with will be able to see what you see. 

Will the preview panel retain the width it was set to?
Yes. The width will be retained when you open a new issue, and also when you navigate away from the List view and come back to it.

Will ctrl+click still open the work items in a new tab?
Yes, if you click on the issue key (ABCDE-123). The intention of the preview panel is to let you open your work items and take action without ever losing your place in the List view, on top of still being able to multi-task across work items using your current workflow. 

When will preview panels be available?
By the end of Australian FY26 (but we're pushing for sooner).

How will preview panels look in the Issue Navigator / 'Work item search'?

For the love of all that is good in the world, please remember to think about small laptop screens. The current backlog view if even one side panel is open is impossible to work with on a 14" laptop for example, and if this thing can't be hidden away it'll be a nightmare.

This is an exciting update. Now, I'd be REALLY excited if we were to see an announcement that the List view now supports keeping item hierarchy even when filtered... :)

Would be great to be able to filter List items by assignee but still see how those items roll up to parents.

1. When is the end of Australian FY26 placed in the Gregorian calendar?

2. With this different way of essentially achieving the same thing, will we be able to scroll sideways in the current search? In case the preview is obscuring some of my columns.

@Anastasiya Golendukhina The preview panel won't be able to be hidden away, but work items will continue to be able to be opened in a new tab or window (and perhaps pairing that with using "split view" in the browser could help with the 14" screen size).

@dreytset We're across the problem where hierarchy is lost when filters are applied (stay tuned!).

It's never too late to party, @Rune Rasmussen. The Australian Financial Year ends on 30 June, and yes, you'll be able to scroll the work item table sideways.

That "Stay tuned" has me on pins and needles... just got another question from a team member about if there's any way to keep hierarchy when filtering. Was more related to List view, I think, but applies globally. Would love to see that. 😊

First day seeing this - this is an absolutely horrible change. Let me get this straight...you change/remove views, and the corresponding option to toggle for personal preference, and are touting this as beneficial? This "split" view, on a single 14 inch monitor, does not offer the information I need when attempting to view both JIRA tickets and the lists of my filters. 

Look, I hate to sound strident here, but this is "a change to make a change." Am I able to change back to the "Detail" view in order to continue working effectively, or do I need to have my IT department roll back this "enhancement?"

Andy Drucker summed it up perfectly.  My dept worked with our internal IT this morning, trying to sort these changes out.  We see no benefit at all to the changes.  In fact, it adds more steps to view and open our in work items.   And the split screen view is non useable even on a 20" monitor. You can use the detailed view, but then to see the open list, you have to close and use the back button, whereas before they were listed vertically on the left side, and you could simply click on them to open.  change to make a change is exactly right Andy!

Odd observation. Going to a work item and clicking on the ellipsis to Add Apps, all the apps are labelled BETA and JIRA is in all caps. Seems to be due to using

Please, please, please get the Detailed view back. It's impossible to use the current view and I'm not the only one in my team who is suffering. This is just an option for user's convenience. This is terrible new experience to get used to these new unreadable panels I don't really need in my everyday life. I have quite extensive task descriptions and I'd rather be able to read them full screen as it used to be.

I've been using the detailed view for years, but I don't actually need all of that information. What I really care about is seeing all my assigned tickets and then clicking on one to read all the relevant details. The issue is that this current view takes up most of the screen, and the large table prevents me from properly reading and interacting with the ticket. Even after removing most of the columns, the page still looks disorganized, and I couldn't adjust the ticket details width; I could only adjust it to the middle of the screen. I can't work effectively in this view, and I may have to stop using it altogether because, in my case, it's useless.

I still prefer the detailed view. Please keep that option, at least for the people who are used to working with it.

I have been searching to reenable the Detailed View as soon as it disappeared sometime this week, only finding this announcement through a feature card that was shown in Jira today (it should have been shown the very first time this view was shown to users, as this announcement is definitely not discoverable otherwise; I tried searching for Atlassian Cloud release notes but was unsuccessful in finding any).

This is not a positive change, with extremely poor performance for the table view (that was never an issue before) and a nonsensical choice of viewing an issue only by clicking its issue key or a small button, not the entire row—or at least its title column, changing a title is non-frequent so doesn't deserve to be the primary left-click interaction.

I'd request to bring back the original detail view, at least while the new experience is not up to par. I'd also suggest introducing feature previews that users can toggle between, gathering and addressing feedback before a full rollout.

I didn't use detail view much personally, but a major drawback of this removal is the absence of the carrot buttons that would let you scroll through the issue lists. Users are now forced to use keyboard shortcuts or click in and out of tickets, which is clunky and performs poorly. If we have no choice but to use the preview panel, at least maintain the navigation. What's the point of a list if you can't efficiently scroll through it?

Now I have neither a "preview view" or a "detail view" and must open every task in a different tab.  This is a major step backwards.

How does one enable the old detail view?

If it ain't broke, why try to fix it?

Hi,

thank you for the update and for introducing the new preview panel experience.

From a user perspective, I would really appreciate having the option to configure this behavior — specifically the ability to choose whether issues open directly in full-page view on a standard click, without needing to use Ctrl/Cmd-click or middle-click.

For some workflows, the previous behavior was more efficient, so having this as a configurable preference (user or admin level) would make the transition much smoother.

This has just been rolled out to our instance today and I have to say it is not good. I'm immediately looking for the toggle to put back the old list view, where you can then click one ticket and scroll through the rest of the tickets or 'return to search'

I've always used the old 'List view' and never the 'Detail View' because having the detail of a ticket on screen in the with the search results is just too noisy, especially when working on a small screen. What this change has essentially done is force the 'Detail View' on users and taken away the choice. Why?

Please bring back the option to go toggle to the style of the old List View.

I have given up on Atlassian providing user preferences for UI changes like this. It costs development time & money that they would rather spend on shipping other new features which nobody asked for.

This change was horrible for our environment.  We use the Detailed view for so many meetings that we have. It was rolled out to us today.  I do not like that I am bound to do it this way.  As others have said, why can't you give us the choice? If I want detailed view or sidebar view or list view.  Just add the button allowing for me to toggle between them. If you can't do that, then at least make the side panel open even farther across the screen and not stop half way. I could be ok with that.  I use the list view for many things. So that is great, however, not being able to use the detailed view as I go over tickets in my sprint meetings was painful at best today!  

Please, please, please bring back the detailed view or at the very minimum, let me open the sidebar further across the screen than just halfway. I would be ok with that.  On a laptop, this makes no sense and now I need to open the ticket all the way to see the details.  That is an extra step for me and does not save any of my time!  Idea is good, functionality and usefulness in our processes now have added time to my day.  Please at least allow for me to make the side bar window bigger and stretch further across the screen. That would be acceptable to us.
