What can we learn?
Jira has multiple project types created with built-in templates. In Cloud, the project types are business, software, Jira Service Management, and Jira Product Discovery. In Server and Data Center, the project types are software, service, and business.
Organizations often create Jira projects for teams, departments, or long term strategic initiatives. Use the features on the page to filter the project list by type, keyword, category, and more.
Additionally, Jira Cloud has also has company-managed and team-managed project types. Company-managed projects use schemes that are configured by Jira administrators. Team-managed projects are scheme-less and are managed by regular users.
In the screenshot, “Company Rebrand” is a company-managed software project. “Contracts” is a team-managed business project.
Jira projects can be categorized using the “Category” feature. This provides a way to group related projects and search their work items and issues.
Tip: My suggestion is to either categorize every Jira project or categorize no Jira projects. I like to categorize because it lets users include or exclude a large amount of issue data. For example, a query like “category = Examples” only returns issues from the “Approval Examples” and “Behavior Examples” projects shown in the above screenshot.
This screenshot shows many projects categorized as “Template Demo”. I recommend creating one Jira project, of each type, so you can see how they work. I named the projects with the same name as the template used. Otherwise, there’s no way to know which template was used later.
Tip: If you create example or test projects in production, be sure to hide them from regular users. In Server, Data Center, or a company-managed project in Cloud, hide projects by restricting the “Browse Projects” item in permission schemes. In team-managed projects in Cloud, hide projects by setting the project access level to “Private”.
