What can we learn?

An issue type is a classification of issues in a Jira project. Example: Task, Sub-task, Epic, Story, Bug, Service Request, Change, etc. The issue type field is required when any Jira issue is created. When creating an issue, the Jira project and the issue type you used last are automatically selected. To change an issue's type after creation, use the “move” command.

Each Jira project can have its own set of issue types, based on the type of work done. Issue types give the ability for different issues to have different workflows, different screens, or both.

The first screenshot shows a set of issue types for Jira projects intended for software development work. The second screenshot shows a set of issue types for support-type Jira projects.

These examples contain default types automatically created by Jira Software and Jira Service Management, but custom types are supported as well. The list of issue types, their order, and the default selection is all customizable per Jira project. These settings are managed by a Jira application administrator using an issue type scheme.
