What can we learn?

Atlassian is improving and standardizing terminology across their products. In May 2024, Atlassian announced that Jira Software and Jira Work Management are combined under the brand name Jira. In March 2025, Atlassian renamed Atlassian University to Atlassian Learning. Additionally, the online Atlassian Community is now called Atlassian Community Forums. Both can be accessed from: community.atlassian.com. Also in 2025, “work” is the new collective term for issues tracked in Jira Cloud (only) and “apps” is replacing the term “products.”

There’s one more term that often creates confusion however, and it’s “components.”

Components in Jira

Jira projects have components which provide categorization and auto-assignment capabilities for Jira work items.

Components in Compass

Atlassian has another product called Compass, that integrates with Jira, which also has components. Those components generally represent pieces of software, like microservices, libraries, or applications.

Components in Jira automation rules

Finally, different parts of automation rules like triggers, conditions, and actions, are also referred to as components.

Next time you use the word “component” be sure to clarify which type you’re talking about!

Great article as usual.  I think what I find most confusing/annoying is when adding new components to a Jira project, this prompt about "Compass Components" vs "Jira Components" is somewhat annoying.  I feel it's a ploy to sell me Compass which we currently don't have.
