Jira Cloud filter results now open issues in a side panel - can this be disabled

Hi Atlassian Community,

in Jira Cloud, when I open an issue from the filter/search results page, it now opens in a right-side panel instead of opening the issue as a full page.

I do not see any setting for this in the three-dot menu or in the filter view settings. The tooltip on the icon says “Open work item”. I have attached a screenshot showing the icon/behavior.

Is there any way to restore the previous behavior, so that clicking an issue opens it directly as a full issue page instead of a side panel?

I know I can use Ctrl/Cmd-click or open the issue in a new browser tab as a workaround, but I would like to know whether there is a Jira setting, user preference, or admin configuration that controls this behavior.

Thanks for any advice.

Hello @Jan Pilař

This preview panel is part of a permanent Jira Cloud UI update, so there isn't an admin setting to disable it. To bypass it and open issues full-screen, just Ctrl/Cmd-click (or middle-click) the link to open it in a new tab, or click the expand icon inside the panel. If this change heavily disrupts your team's daily workflow, I definitely recommend submitting feedback directly to Atlassian Support.

Hi,

thank you very much for your quick response and for the reference.
I understand that this is part of the new Jira Cloud UI. I will submit a feature request to Atlassian to allow configuration of this behavior, as it impacts our workflow.

Thanks again for your help

This forced behavior wastes more time for no reason. Either you have a new tab to close, a new window to close and an extra click for a zoomed in view. Not everyone has a 50 inch screen to support the side panel view.

Also in the zoomed in state you cannot return to the list as before which is more time wasted.

When was this change implemented? It's a terrible UX decision.

@Arkadiusz Wroblewski Where can we submit feedback that this is a terrible change? I need to review 200+ issues at a time, and this has doubled my workflow time.

Do we have a workaround at least?

How do you comment on the CLOUD ticket ? Why make us repeat our feedback all over again. Why is a new feature that is rejected by most of your users not a bug and a suggestion ?

I have to agree that the recent update has introduced some significant usability challenges, and it is unclear how this approach was considered an improvement to the current workflow.

When managing a high volume of tickets, having each one open within a side panel and then requiring them to be popped out individually is not an efficient or user-friendly process. This change adds unnecessary complexity and slows down daily operations.

I would strongly encourage a review of this update, with consideration given to reverting to the previous functionality, as it provided a more streamlined and effective user experience.

Please revert back or allow us to disable the side panel. It is unusable. Almost to the point that I wonder if whoever implemented this did any user testing at all...
